What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing has many descriptions, yet all amount to basically the same things. Affiliate marketing is a type of. It is a cooperative effort between merchants and an  affilate or an affiliate’s website. For many years already, affiliate marketing has been a cost-efficient, measurable method of delivering long-term results to both merchants and affiliates. With this kind of marketing, site owners can make some extra or additional income for their site. Every day, more people become involved in affiliate marketing, however many new affiliates do so without a full understanding of how the affiliate world operates. This causes many costly mistakes and lends a negative view toward the field in many cases. In plain words, affiliate marketing has often been terribly and grossly misunderstood.

A common misconception associated with affiliate marketing is “selling.” Although selling is, indeed, an important component and a central function of business operation, affiliate marketing should never be solely about sales! Another concept that is taken out of control in the mention of affiliate marketing is when people infer that affiliate marketing is linked with and only revolves around “advertising”. While advertising and marketing a certain product should not be underestimated or minimized, the fact of the matter is, advertising like selling, is merely a part of the many functions of marketing.

In affiliate marketing, affiliates are compensated for every visitor, subscriber and/or customer provided through affiliate efforts. Compensation may be made based on a certain value for each visit. The most attractive aspect of affiliate marketing from the merchant’s viewpoint is that no payment is due to an affiliate until results are 'in,' or once results of the affiliate's efforts are realized.

Affiliate marketing is typically run by affiliate networks. These networks are most often composed of two functional bodies: (1)group affiliates and (2)group merchants. Each group has a specific function and role in affiliate marketing. The network acts as a third party between merchants and associated affiliates. The network provides the technology to deliver merchant campaigns and offers. The affiliate network also collects commission fees from the merchant, then takes care of paying the affiliates.

Merchants are web site owners who want to benefit from the advantage of performance based marketing. Benefits to merchants are many. First, the merchant maintains and operates the affiliate program. The merchant needs to do some work in researching interested affiliate websites to ensure that these are a good fit for a particular merchant website. Finding a fit for merchandise is the key to generating more income. The merchant has access to markets and customers without the said merchant having to spend extra and valuable time searching for affiliates. Banner ads on affiliate sites are not distracting to most site visitors and users. A banner (used by the affiliate) might produce interest for that product and drive the consumer to the merchants’ website. It is also the merchant who decides how much he is willing to pay for each sale that results from a visitor sent from an affiliate.

The affiliate marketer also realizes many benefits in the merchant-affiliate relationship. An affiliate-site owner promoting one or more merchants and connected affiliate items and programs can generate a fill-time income! This, however, is not a particularly easy tasks to accomplish but many successful affiliates do manage a full-time lucrative income just this way! Successful affiliates, of course, need to have a very good understanding and agreement with the merchant(s) involved, including what commission amounts will be, expected payment, expected payment methods, and also, the time involved in the merchant-affiliate contract. An affiliate has carries the responsibility to put forth quality merchandise that their target market (choice visitor type) will be most interested in.

For example, if the site has a user/visitor base of mainly stay-at-home mothers, then on-line job openings such as surveys would be a good match for them. This group  might also greatly appreciate direct links to children’s products, information sites and possibly also educational sites. Merchandisers often provide targeted, best-seller items and personal support to their affiliate, and whenever possible, affiliates should attempt to find merchants who do provide these things. Often, merchants offer bonuses on choice items, and add some very unique sales promotions that will benefit the merchandiser as well as the affiliate.

Affiliate marketing is a great situation for both the marketer and the affiliate, providing that the affiliate learns the ropes. If merchants and affiliates work together, they can both help one another to achieve a very mazimized income. This kind of business costs next to nothing for the affiliate and affiliates can be up and running in business within just a few short days.
